My Belly Button

OK...confession time. It's about something that virtually everyone has that I don't(no, it's not a belly-button). I wasn't born with the desire for it. I look at everyone else out there and see that they have it and I think, "Is it weird that I have no desire for it?" It looks great on them, but for me, I don't think it'd be so great. What is it? You guessed it (or not)- a cell phone.

Yeah, it's true. I had one when they first came out and never-ever used it. I saved it for vacations and emergencies and I guess those just never occured. I am irritated with cell-phone users. I can't tell you how many times I've wanted to scream out the window of my car, "Hang up and DRIVE!" And have you tried having a conversation with someone who is a cell-phone addict (CFA)? I have. Here's how it goes;

Me: Yeah, so I just found out I have an inoperable brain tumor.
CFA: Really? (flips phone open) Just a sec. I gotta take this. (Aswers phone and talks cheerfully...then finally hangs up.

CFA: Sorry about that. I'll set my phone on vibrate. What were you saying?
Me: Oh well I'm dy...
*Bzzzzz...Bzzzzzz*
CFA: (Looks at phone to see if the person calling is more interesting than me, then holds one finger up) Hi! Oh my gosh, I'm so glad you called me back. So what're you doing tonight?
(discusses plans for going out that night- to a benefit dinner that "everyone who's anyone" will be at)

CFA: Sorry. It was really important. There's this lady who has a brain tumor and there's a benefit for her.
Me: Really? (walks away mumbling, "There's another one to cross off my inheritance list.")

OK, so before I tick-off everyone in the free world, I'll just give you a teaser for next time; yesterday I bought a cell phone. Yes, it's true. I am now one of you! And you know what? I think it would have been easier to go belly-button-less.

I hate cell phones but have one. You can't really beat them if your car breaks or your day care needs to call if your child's sick. But I feel like they cut everyone off -- just like your funny example; it's not far off at all from the truth.

I so agree with you, and yet I have a cell phone. It's mostly for when I'm driving because once I get to my destination, the phone stays in the car. Because I don't want to talk on the phone. If I'd wanted to do that I'd stay home and talk. If I'm browsing at the library or bookstore, at a meeting, or visiting with friend, that's what I want to do, and I'm sorry, but I'm not available for phone conversations right now.

Oh I'm glad I'm not alone! I just got back from the conference. I'm tired but very inspired!
