The Games We Played

The games you played as a child have a story to tell. Whether they were board games or games you played with your neighborhood friends, whether they were played spontaneously at recess or organized by your teacher- playing games is one of those memories that stays with us.

I was considering writing an article on pioneer children recently. As I searched online, I kept reading about how there wasn't room for their toys in the wagons that came west. So to play, they made up games, or played those passed from generation to generation. But the names of the games were not familiar to me, so I was curious...would my parents or aunts remember the games? They were a generation or two after the wagon trains. I found out that yes, they did remember such games as "Run Sheep Run." But somehow that game didn't make it another generation.

What games did you play when you were young? Remember "Red Rover, Red Rover"? How about "Duck, Duck, Goose" or "Drop the Hanky"? Did you play board games? Remember playing "Life" and "Twister" and "Sorry"? Take a moment to enjoy the memory and then write it down.

And whatever you do, Write Now-Because it IS later than you think. ~Karen

Great post! We made up our own games, like Flying Witches, or copied the tv and became Charlie's Angels. Tag was always popular, and still is, because I'm tagging you with a meme. Bwahhaha. You can have either one that Amy and Jen tagged me with, taggee's choice!

Hey Karen, What a smashing photo of you there to the right. Really lovely!

Speaking of games, "Button-button-who's-got-the-button" and "Rhythm" sometimes called "Concentration" were hits at our house. (Raised without a TV, so games filled the vacuum.)

A subscribe box? I don't know what that is. If you tell me how to do it, I will. Thanks Cheryl!

Plaid- You guys are way too tricky. But as you can see, I wasn't here when you "tagged" me so back-atcha. LOL

Hi Eileen- Yeah, when I was growing up, we had three channels that you had to get up to change. Somehow three choices, made me choose a fourth...going outside to play or ride bikes. ~Karen
