Finding Motivation

I'm reading, "Bird by Bird" by Anne Lamott. In the book is a passage about motivation. The author shares that she has a one-inch by one-inch frame on her desk. And when she is struggling with something she is working on, she looks at that frame and remember to just work one inch at a time. I love that.

I don't know where I can find a one inch frame, but I do like thinking about it. In fact, I think I'll put a ruler on my wall or bulletin board. Sometimes I am overwhelmed by my own goals. At times it seems to not matter. I have no boss breathing down my neck; no time clock to punch; no set hours to keep. But life is made up of the small choices we make.

What do you do to keep motivated? ~Karen

Hey Karen, WONDERFUL bird photo - what a silhouette! What motivates me? My 15 minute timer. It helps keep me from being overwhelmed. But I CAN do a little something for 15 minutes. Think right now I'll head on in there to my little kitchen for 15 min of washing dishes. Yipee! (say, been writing on your porch swing much lately?) ;) EE

Well, no. Haven't used the porch swing since it got below about 50 degrees. I was looking at my photo and thought, "Sheesh, I need a winter photo there." Plus, I'm sick of seeing myself. As I said on your blog- I'm a chronic timer-user too. I started when I injured my back. I'm tellin' you, sometimes I set it for just two minutes and it is AMAZING what you can do in just two minutes every half hour or so. The photo is one of those which I meant to take one thing (not silhouette) and it turned out another way...but I like it too. Thanks. ~Karen

Let us know how you like Lamott's book. I've heard good things about it.

I am very bad about not bothering to try to write unless I have a decent chunk of time to myself, which I pretty much never have. My blog is all I can handle these days! I figure you have to really concentrate and get into writing mode and that can't be done well in 15 minute blocks. It's not like doing dishes. Perhaps I am wrong and should change my attitude.

I love that book. I've read it twice so far. The frame trick is a good one.
