Conference-What to bring - What to do

What to Bring to a Writer's Conference:
  • Paper and pencil/pen
  • Business cards
  • breath mints/gum
  • Hard candy
  • Sweater
  • Pain killers such as ibuprofen
  • Comfortable clothing and shoes

What to do at a Writer's Conference:

  • Arrive early
  • Make friends
  • Sit near the door if you plan to leave early or have an annoying ailment like a cough
  • Ask questions
  • Put on a robe of self-confidence
  • Stay after the event/session to network

Think of a writer's conference as a business meeting. You are learning the business of writing. You've paid to be there and it is up to you to get as much as possible out of it. A group of people are assembled that will never have the same make-up again. There are your fellow writers, agents, editors and conference organizers. Each author brings with them, their own history. This is an opportunity that will never present itself in quite the same way again. Enjoy it but remember to take it seriously. Keep your eyes and your mind open to the treasures that lie in the moment.

Good advice, all the way around. I suggest breath mints/candies along the lines of Altoids because then you won't have any wrappings that will rattle and irk your neighbors. Also, an umbrella is a good idea if there's any chance of rain. In my experience at conferences on college campuses the parking is usually far away and that umbrella and those sensible shoes you mentioned will be mighty handy.

Oh that's great. I hadn't thought about the wrappings...good idea. And my conference was in Seattle, so yeah...rain was a consideration.

I actually made the mistake of wearing my cute shoes one day because I was meeting with an agent. I have blisters on blisters. I did look cute though, but with a slight limp.
