Marketing - Learning from Harry Potter Hacker

OK. So you've probably heard the news. Earlier this week, a hacker posted a message claiming that he had a copy of the seventh and final installment of the Harry Potter series. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is due to be released on July 21, 2007.

All the talk, all the hype got me to thinking about marketing. Obviously a lot of dollars went into marketing this book. Most of us won't have that budget when our own book is ready to hit the shelves. So what's a J.K. Rowling (or James Patterson or whoever) wanna-be to do? Well slither on our belly like a snake and learn from a thief of course. Here's what he taught us:

  • Use the internet/media to your advantage-It's there to disceminate information and that info. might as well be about you and your book.
  • Controversy sells- No matter where you stand on this hacker's tactics and the truth or lack there of, the news of it got you talking and thinking and that's great advertising.
  • Spidering- You can bet that every person who understands how it works, is trying to figure out an angle to get more hits on their website or blog.
  • Keep adding new elements- Before, during and after your book is released, keep thinking of new angles to increase interest in your book.

Lessons from a hacker...hey I think I just spun my first web.

Oh, and I tried that sleep thing you seem so keen on. It actually wasn't bad.
