Label Me - Please

My husband and I took our son school shopping today. We drove to a town about 60 miles away to do so, because our small town doesn't have any of the "cool" places that have the name brands that my son wants. Yes...I'm one of "those" moms. But let me tell you how many name brands I consistently wear...uh... exactly 0%. Oh and did I mention that I LOVE Ross? Ross is a discount store that has those required (according to my son) name brands, with less than a K-Mart price. Woohoo for cheapsters like me!

So anyway-As we stood in the check-out line, and I marveled at how much money one can spend on said-cheap clothes, I noticed a rack nearby. Someone had apparently been assigned the arduous task of putting large round stickers on the comforters or sheets. There was a whole roll of "Queen" stickers. So my immediate thought was..."Hey, they must have known I was coming...there's my name all over those stickers." I am the queen afterall!

"That's what I need right there!" I exclaimed.

Without missing a beat, my husband walked over to the rack and carefully pealed a sticker off.

"There you go." He said, handing it to me.

I slapped it on my chest and, well...felt like a queen. I walked around the rest of the afternoon with a blue, "Queen" sticker announcing to all my royal subjects, that indeed, "The queen has arrived." Often, I forgot all about it and then suddenly thought, "Oh yeah, I'm a queen."

We got back home this evening and went to visit my parents. When my sister arrived from out of town, I went out to greet her. And you won't believe what she did! Without a hug...without even a hello, she dethroned me. That's right! She peeled my sticker right off my chest and put it on hers.

"I want to be queen." She said in a whiney voice, exactly like the one I'd used on her thirty-something years ago.

So I let her have it; let me clarify that. I didn't punch her or anything. I gave up my throne. (and took a picture of...uh...her sticker) I'd had my fun. I'd learned what it means to have a label....a good one.

How often do we label people with negativity? Dumb. Ugly. Stupid.

"She'll never amount to anything."

"You're just like your father."

"You'll never change."

If you had a positive label to stick to yourself, what would it be? Choose something that you need to see everyday. Choose something that makes you feel special. Choose something that is contrary to your current situation. Choose something that makes you smile, giggle, or walk a little taller.

And then, when you no longer need the reminder, pass it on to someone who does.

Karen

Karen, what a nice thing you did, letting your sister be 'queen'. I like the idea of giving ourselves a positive label.

I think my label would be a goofy picture of my son ~ I couldn't help but smile, which would make me feel better immediately.

What a great post. Really nice. You know what's funny. You know how we can label our profile pictures at forums like AW. Well, today I was feeling all bummed because Ben sucks and now I'm moving and work is hard and....

So, I renamed my profile at the b5 forums, "Offbeat Princess" that made me feel a little better and is a very strange coincidence now that I read this. I think this post should be published somewhere. You always surprise me.

Do you think I could get a copyright on my sister's...yeah...well. Where would one send something like this? I'll just share with my loyal, I mean royal...subjects...YOU!

Hi Karen, I'm so glad I dropped by your blog today. I've been MIA for a month from AW and I miss all you guys.

I think my label has to Best Selling AUTHOR - I'm working hard on a few projects so this should come into fruition.

My blog is going great. Perhaps you would drop by sometime.
